Being the first settlement in Netherlands with a Roman city allure, Maastricht is well know for it’s antiquities – but

none quite like the ones that Baxter’s were called in to transport to Munich. The items included ancient roman

sculptures, busts, masks and a ceramic sarcophagus.

Challenge

The first challenge was addressing the access – smaller vehicles needed to be laid on to ferry back and forth. The

weight of the items also meant we needed a hoist and other equipment that enabled us to handle the half tone

torsos safely – both for us and for the statues!

Being watched

Most torsos were transported in wooden crates and the 7ft ceramic sarcophagus was professionally wrapped by

our specially trained staff. However - on the request of the owner - some statues were transported with their heads

showing, enabling the handlers to see the items.

The other side

As soon as the items were delivered to Gorny & Mosch, the auction house specialising in Roman and Greek

antiquities, they were unloaded. With items displayed, all that was left for the Baxter team to do was clean all the

packaging debris and head back to the UK.
